Car Insurance Cost by State
State rules, traffic, repair costs, weather, claims, urban density, and insurer filings can all influence premiums.
State differences have multiple causes
NAIC explains that premiums reflect underwriting and rating, while its historical expenditure analysis notes that coverage mix, traffic, urban population, miles driven, income, state law, and other factors can correlate with differences.
Do not confuse three numbers
A state average, a state minimum requirement, and your personal premium are different things. A minimum limit tells you the legal floor. An expenditure average describes what a population spent in a dated dataset. A quote reflects one insurer’s current underwriting for one risk profile.
Use the requirements table separately
Open the 50-state and DC requirements table to review legal minimums, then use the estimator for a transparent planning scenario.
Compare the same protection
When shopping across states or insurers, keep liability limits, UM/UIM, PIP or MedPay, deductibles, drivers, vehicles, and mileage consistent. Otherwise a lower price may simply represent less coverage.
