Coverage planning guide

How Much Car Insurance Do I Need?

Start with legal minimums, then consider the people, assets, vehicle, lender requirements, and risks you actually need to protect.

Start with the legal floor

Minimum liability limits are set by state law and generally address injuries or property damage you cause to others. They do not automatically protect your own vehicle, replace lost wages, or make a serious claim financially comfortable.

Separate the coverage decisions

Liability, uninsured/underinsured motorist, PIP or MedPay, collision, and comprehensive coverage solve different problems. Treat them as separate decisions instead of using “full coverage” as if it were a universal package.

Match limits to exposure

Consider household assets, income, driving environment, vehicle replacement value, health coverage, emergency savings, and whether a lender or lease requires collision and comprehensive coverage. Ask an agent or insurer to show the premium difference between limits before deciding.

Use the ToolVerse comparison tools

Start with the state requirements reference, then use the liability versus full coverage calculator and deductible comparison to organize questions for an actual quote.
